LYLESART was founded in 2014 and has developed an avenue to mobilize the artistic expression of local and regional artists who excel at communicating powerful concepts in diverse media. LYLESART is the creation of Cleveland native, artist, Julius Lyles III. Who has conducted innovative exhibitions around a general theme of Black aesthetics with detail towards racial identity, social and institutionalized inequality, organized racism, political dysfunction and community service activities through his art practice since 2006. His personal values and motivation to enrich underserved communities with art-based leadership development has been the driving force.

LYLESART received its official 501(C)3 status in November 2014, and immediately continued Lyles’ work leveraging creative community resources to build thriving neighborhoods. We act as a catalyst by integrating arts and cultural programming, workforce enhancement, hands-on education, and artistic intervention.

Inspiring youth to actively enrich their communities through development in art and continuously provide support in the field of innovation, research, creativity and culture in the edification of art.

Our belief is that students in Northeast Ohio, can develop high-level art skills, become more confident engaged learners, and develop their own identities as creative individuals. To reinforce STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) curricula within schools; and engage Cleveland's youth in learning positive life skills, job skills, creative problem solving, and high quality visual art techniques. LYLESART intends to annually impact the lives of young aspiring artisans. Our resources will augment mentorship support, direct effective discussions, lectures, workshop programs through numerous art-based developmental activities.

LYLESART has developed an outreach strategic model that focuses on a core group of youths.

  • ARTUCATION: Intergrated Visual medium workshops that links middle level students and professional artists through advanced visual education. Students are exposed to a variety of specialized artists who discuss their careers.
  • Dig-iT: Neighborhood minority media art, Urban Agriculture project is a new media youth development workshop that cultivates community engagement through the enrichment of Digital Documentation, Media Literacy, and Social media engagement.
  • ARTOGRAPHY: Family portraiture taking project to cultivate community engagement through the enrichment of film documentation, media literacy, and social commitment. This experience results in a deepened sense of understanding and ability to translate their personal content into their own knowledge base while communicating the knowledge back to their community.

Programming goals are to provide platforms for hands-on learning opportunities, art education and neighborhood outreach to students who do not have the exposure to art enrichment. The programming themes include multiculturalism and environmentalism. These four to seven-week programs are aligned to the Ohio Department of Education’s Model Curriculum for Visual Arts and provides hands-on experience by pairing professional artists with middle level students and their instructors. The artists provide the classroom teachers with mentoring, expertise and content knowledge in the selected medium while guiding an individual classroom of up to 35 students in art production, instruction, career background and pathway options.

Key program components are:

  • Public art exhibition
  • Instructional workshops
  • Target of urban populations
  • Art therapy and expression
  • Exposure to artisan communities
  • Public reception for student exhibition & Pop-Up Gallery
  • Hands-on engaging instructional workshops
  • Production of unique art work by student artist
  • Exclusive field trips to museums, art galleries and artist studios
  • Development of public speaking skills and presentation
  • Workforce Development
  • Professional Mentorship
  • Continual involvement through mentorship and career readiness
  • Student/Parent commitment to acceptable academic performance, behavior and accountability for school attendance
  • Optional School fundraiser

LYLESART is also committed to developing public programs that are free and open to our community. These events are designed to address the lack of recognized diverse artistic talent in Cuyahoga County. LYLESART also organizes an exhibition each season, working with artists, curators and the community, in which students and professionals are paired together and asked to organize and exhibit based on a shared experience. Exhibitions are held at least once a year and are free and open to the public.

One sign of a healthy community is its simultaneous ability to preserve and invent its culture, to conserve its history and heritage while developing new expressions for current times. In a country, as diverse and complex as the United States, the art of many cultures is layered and contested into many young inspiring artisans.
